Former Brazilian President and current New Development Bank (NDB) President Dilma Rousseff participated in the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 curtain raiser event held in Shanghai on Friday.
During her speech, Rousseff expressed deep sorrow regarding the devastating Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad and offered sincere condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
"At the #IDY2025 curtain raiser, Dilma Rouseff, President of New Development Bank and former President of Brazil, conveyed profound grief about the tragic Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad, extending heartfelt condolences to the victims' families, as well as to India's people and government. She also wished for the quick recovery of the lone survivor," shared the Consulate General of India in Shanghai via a post on X.

Only one passenger survived and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Addressing the importance of International Day of Yoga, Rousseff remarked that the celebration has evolved into a representation of peace and resilience.
"Yoga represents one of India's most valuable contributions to the world, a discipline that crosses boundaries of geography, language, and belief systems. Founded in ancient wisdom, yoga instructs us on achieving balance with ourselves, others, and our environment. This is why the United Nations adopted Prime Minister @narendramodi's proposal to designate June 21st as International Day of Yoga. Since its establishment, this day has become a symbol of peace and resilience, values critically important in today's world," stated Rousseff, as quoted by the Consulate.

Consul General Pratik Mathur and other Indian officials attended the event, which initiated celebrations leading up to IDY 2025.
India's main celebration will be hosted in Visakhapatnam, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will guide the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) session with over five lakh participants. Simultaneously, 'Yoga Sangam' sessions will be conducted at more than one lakh locations throughout India, anticipated to be one of the world's largest coordinated yoga demonstrations.
Rousseff also acknowledged India's significant contribution to establishing the New Development Bank and emphasized PM Modi's crucial role.
"Acknowledging India's essential role in NDB's formation, she remarked, 'India is not merely a founding member of NDB, it is a nation without which this bank could not exist. Prime Minister Modi was among the founders, and we are all committed to developing an important financial institution for the global community,'" the Consulate General concluded.
