New Delhi:
The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday referred to India and Canada as "vibrant democracies" and stated that New Delhi anticipates the upcoming meeting between the prime ministers of both nations during the G7 Summit will provide a significant opportunity to share perspectives and investigate avenues to reestablish bilateral relations.
This statement was made by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal while addressing a question during his regular weekly media briefing.
"Our Prime Minister received a call from the Canadian Prime Minister recently. During this conversation, Prime Minister Mark Carney extended an invitation to Prime Minister (Modi) to attend the G7 (meeting), and as you know, this invitation has been accepted," he stated.
The MEA spokesperson added that the call also served as an occasion for both prime ministers to discuss India-Canada relations and potential ways forward.
The crucial G7 meeting will be hosted by Canada later this month.
"India and Canada are vibrant democracies, connected by shared democratic values and a firm commitment to the rule of law. Additionally, there are very strong people-to-people connections," Jaiswal remarked.
"We believe the forthcoming meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada will provide an important opportunity for them to exchange views on bilateral and global issues, and explore pathways to set or reset the relationship, based on mutual respect, shared interests and sensitivity to each other's concerns," he explained.
Later, responding to another question regarding the future direction of India-Canada relations, Jaiswal simply stated, "We are exploring path to reset ties."
