6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Anchorage Area: No Tsunami Threat or Major Damage Reported

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System confirmed that no tsunami was anticipated following the seismic event.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Anchorage metropolitan area on Thursday morning.

The seismic event occurred at approximately 8:11 a.m. local time, reaching a depth of 69 kilometers (43 miles), as reported by the USGS. The epicenter was identified 12 kilometers (7 miles) west-northwest of Susitna, Alaska, situated about 67 miles (108 kilometers) northwest of Anchorage. Initial assessments indicated no significant damage.

Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance shared via social media that municipal inspectors had examined key public infrastructure following the earthquake and discovered no concerning issues.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a statement confirming that no tsunami was expected as a result of the seismic activity.

In response to the event, some residents displayed characteristic Alaskan resilience by humorously referring to the Thanksgiving holiday as "Shakesgiving" on various online platforms.

Alaska holds the distinction of being the most earthquake-prone state in the United States and ranks among the world's most seismically active regions, according to USGS data. The state typically experiences a magnitude 7 earthquake approximately once per year.

Local news outlet KTUU TV reported that Thursday's earthquake was the most significant to affect south central Alaska since 2021.
