Breaking Barriers: Ghazala Hashmi Makes History as Virginia's First Muslim and South Asian American Statewide Official

Ghazala Hashmi has made history as the first Muslim woman and first South Asian American elected to statewide office in Virginia. In a recent interview with NDTV, the Lieutenant Governor-elect shared insights about her remarkable journey, her deep connections to Hyderabad, and her vision for the future.

Born in Hyderabad, Hashmi maintains strong emotional ties to her birthplace. "Hyderabad holds a very dear and special place in my heart," she reflected. "I had the opportunity to visit during three summers of my childhood and spend time with my grandparents and cousins. Those are some of my best childhood memories." She described leaving the city as "a deep heartache," feeling as though she was "leaving part of myself behind."

Hashmi noted the increasing influence of Indian Americans in U.S. politics. "The Indian diaspora has grown in strength and numbers. Many individuals from our community are now running for office across different states and platforms," she explained. "Our Indian-American community has been thriving in many professions, and government has become a critical space for many of us."

Before entering politics, Hashmi spent three decades as an educator, following in her father's footsteps as a college professor. This background profoundly shaped her political priorities. "I think the key takeaway as I moved into government is the role that education must play. For me, public education is the most important public good."

Her historic election has inspired women worldwide. "Young women across the globe see in my election their own opportunities," she said. Her message to them is simple yet powerful: "Say yes when opportunity presents itself, take on challenges, and work hard to achieve your goals."

Hashmi highlighted the disparity between the U.S. and other nations regarding women in executive leadership. "I don't think we should undervalue the fact that India and other countries have long elected women as prime ministers, presidents, and chief ministers. Sadly, in the United States, we have yet to see a woman serve as president."

Her political journey began in response to the divisive climate under President Donald Trump. "In 2019, when I first decided to run for the Virginia Senate, it was because of the bigotry and division that Donald Trump brought when he came into office in 2016. He targeted immigrants and Muslims in particular. I felt a responsibility to stand up for the values I hold and to protect all marginalized communities."

As she prepares to take office, Hashmi's priorities include protecting healthcare coverage, strengthening public education, reducing cost burdens on families, and expanding childcare access. She expressed concern about Trump-era restrictions on H-1B visas, warning they create "a real crisis" that could lead to talent loss and company relocations.

Hashmi concluded with a powerful message for young women: "Pursue every opportunity, every goal and ambition, and lay that strong foundation through education."
