Man Wanted For Murder In India Arrested In US, Denied Entry Into Canada

A 22-year-old Indian national, sought for murder charges in India, has been apprehended by U.S. border authorities following his failed attempt to enter Canada.

Vishat Kumar was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing at the Port of Buffalo on November 16 after Canadian authorities denied him entry.

According to a CBP statement, Kumar is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and is wanted by Indian law enforcement authorities in connection with a murder case.

Following his processing by CBP officers, Kumar was transferred to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Enforcement Removal Operations (ICE/ERO) officials.

He is currently being held at the Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York, pending removal proceedings from the United States.

Investigations revealed that Kumar had illegally entered the United States in 2024 and subsequently missed a scheduled asylum interview. During a secondary inspection, authorities discovered he was concealing his identity. Biometric technology confirmed his true identity, revealing he had provided false name and date of birth information.

Further inquiry uncovered that Kumar was wanted in India for murder, as confirmed by the Interpol Red Notice issued against him.

Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek emphasized, "The apprehension of this individual demonstrates the critical role our officers play in safeguarding our nation and working collaboratively with international partners to uphold justice."
