The recent jewelry theft occurs following last month's high-profile Louvre Museum raid in Paris
France:
Police reported on Saturday that thieves in northern France have stolen jewelry valued at up to $1.2 million.
According to reports, the criminals broke into a jewelry boutique located in central Roubaix, near Lille, on Wednesday. They briefly held the jeweler and his spouse hostage before escaping with valuable items.
Police stated that the stolen jewels were valued "between 500,000 and one million euros" ($580,000 and $1.2 million).
Authorities have initiated an investigation into charges of kidnapping, organized crime, and armed extortion.
In a separate incident earlier on Wednesday, multiple individuals detonated explosives on a cash transfer safe at Roubaix's main post office and fled with a bag from inside.
It was later discovered that the stolen bag contained only more empty bags. Six suspects were apprehended that evening.
These robberies follow a daring daytime heist at the Louvre museum in Paris last month, where a gang stole jewelry estimated to be worth $102 million.
