Dr. Jayant Patel: Indian-Origin Surgeon Dismisses Fatal Medical Scandal That Earned Him "Doctor Death" Title

Jayant Patel, once the epicenter of a significant medical scandal in Australia, has dismissed the controversial events that earned him nationwide notoriety.

When approached recently by a reporter from The Australian in Portland, Oregon, the 75-year-old surgeon of Indian descent offered his first public statements since 2015, displaying remarkable detachment regarding his past.

"It was ages ago, and I completely forgot about it, and I'm beyond that," Patel stated during the encounter. He further remarked, "That's done, that's history... I don't react to stupid criticisms, I'm moved on with my life. I'm fine."

Between 2003 and 2005, Patel practiced at Bundaberg Base Hospital in Queensland, where colleagues accused him of performing inadequate surgeries, making incorrect diagnoses, and employing dangerously negligent medical practices.

The numerous complaints, coupled with multiple patient deaths and serious complications, led to the media and public labeling him as "Doctor Death."

American authorities apprehended Patel in 2008, facilitating his extradition to Australia. In 2010, courts convicted him of manslaughter related to three patient deaths, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence. He also faced conviction for harming a fourth patient.

Australia's highest court overturned these convictions two years later, and by 2013, prosecutors abandoned all remaining charges. Following these legal developments, Patel departed Australia and returned to the United States.

Originally born and educated in India before obtaining additional medical qualifications in the United States, Patel had previously encountered disciplinary issues in New York and Oregon long before his Australian appointment.

According to reports, he currently resides with his wife Kishoree, also a physician, in a four-bedroom brick residence in the United States. Local sources describe him driving a white Lexus RX L and living in a property featuring three garages.

When confronted about his controversial medical past, observers noted that Patel appeared "detached and unaffected," showing minimal reflection regarding the trauma experienced by former patients or their families.
