FBI Director Kash Patel conducted an undisclosed trip to China last week to address fentanyl concerns and law enforcement collaboration, according to two sources familiar with the visit. This diplomatic engagement followed the recent summit between US and Chinese presidents where both leaders announced reaching a "consensus" on addressing the fentanyl crisis.
According to a source briefed on the matter, Patel arrived in Beijing on Friday for approximately a 24-hour stay. The FBI Director engaged in discussions with Chinese officials on Saturday, the source confirmed.
Neither the United States nor China officially announced Patel's Beijing visit, with Reuters being the first to report this diplomatic development.
When contacted by Reuters, China's Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the US embassy in Beijing did not provide immediate responses regarding the visit.
Following last month's discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump reduced tariffs on Chinese imports from 20% to 10%, citing the agreement reached on fentanyl control measures as a key factor in this decision.
After their talks, Trump informed reporters that President Xi committed to working "very hard to stop the flow" of fentanyl, the synthetic opioid responsible for the majority of overdose deaths in America.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that specifics of the new agreement would be developed through a newly established bilateral working group. Whether Patel's Beijing discussions included this new mechanism remains unclear.
This agreement represents a policy shift for Trump administration officials, who had previously maintained that punitive economic measures would remain until China demonstrated concrete actions against fentanyl supply networks.
Chinese officials strongly defend their anti-fentanyl efforts, asserting they have already implemented extensive regulations on precursor chemicals used in fentanyl production. They have accused Washington of using the issue as a form of "blackmail."
The Trump-Xi agreement extended beyond fentanyl concerns, including provisions for China to resume purchasing US soybeans.
As part of the agreement, Beijing also committed to suspending export restrictions on rare earth elements announced in October, materials essential for numerous modern technologies.
