A former minister in Sheikh Hasina's cabinet has made explosive allegations in an interview with Russia Today, claiming that the US government's humanitarian agency and the Clinton family orchestrated the Bangladesh uprising that led to Hasina's downfall in 2024.
Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, who served in the ousted administration, pointed to a deep-rooted connection between USAID and the interim government now headed by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
"Several NGOs from the United States, particularly USAID and the International Republican Institute, had been conducting campaigns against our government since 2018," Chowdhury stated in the interview.
The United States Agency for International Development, which is the US government's primary humanitarian organization, was previously under scrutiny when Elon Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency.
Sheikh Hasina had previously accused Yunus of "selling the nation to the US" and referenced how her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, widely regarded as Bangladesh's founding father, had resisted American demands regarding St Martin's Island.
American officials have dismissed any involvement in Bangladesh's political crisis, describing such allegations as "laughable."
On August 5, 2024, Hasina was forced to flee Bangladesh fearing for her safety, shortly before protesters ransacked her residence. This followed weeks of student-led demonstrations across Dhaka and other major cities. She currently resides in Delhi.
According to Chowdhury, the unrest was meticulously orchestrated and financially supported to advance Western interests. He alleged that the Clinton family and Yunus have maintained close ties for years, working persistently toward regime change in Bangladesh.
"The Clinton family and the interim Yunus administration have been connected for an extended period. These operations weren't conducted openly, but clandestine NGOs received funding. They were determined to overthrow the Bangladeshi government," Chowdhury explained during the interview.
The former minister questioned the destination of millions in USAID funding, claiming these resources were directed toward "regime change activities" in Bangladesh. "The chaos was deliberately planned using these funds, ultimately escalating into widespread riots," he asserted.
The political upheaval in Bangladesh during July-August last year resulted in approximately 700 fatalities amid protests over job quotas, with continuing reports of violence against Hindu minorities. Following the collapse of Hasina's government, Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership, initiating a significant policy shift that brought Bangladesh closer to Pakistan—a nation responsible for genocide in Bangladesh in 1971.
