The agreement marks OpenAI's first major partnership since implementing its new organizational structure.
United States:
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has secured a substantial $38 billion agreement with Amazon's AWS cloud computing division. This partnership adds to OpenAI's growing list of significant collaborations, which already includes tech giants Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and the semiconductor powerhouse Nvidia.
The seven-year contract allows OpenAI, partially owned by AWS competitor Microsoft, to access extensive computing resources including hundreds of thousands of cutting-edge Nvidia GPUs—hardware that has been fundamental to the generative artificial intelligence revolution. Additionally, the deal provides access to tens of millions of conventional CPUs necessary for deploying everyday agentic AI applications.
Sam Altman, OpenAI's co-founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of this partnership: "Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute. Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone."
OpenAI will begin utilizing AWS computing resources immediately, with plans to fully implement the allocated capacity before the end of 2026, and options for further expansion in subsequent years.
Industry analysts estimate that OpenAI has committed to approximately $1 trillion in infrastructure agreements in 2025, including a $300 billion deal with Oracle and a $500 billion Stargate project involving Oracle and SoftBank.
This enormous infrastructure investment comes as OpenAI's 2025 revenue projections reach tens of billions—an impressive figure for a startup, but still insufficient to cover the massive computing costs required to power its sophisticated chatbot systems.
This AWS agreement represents OpenAI's first major deal since restructuring its organization, which now allows greater flexibility to move beyond its non-profit origins and generate profits for investors.
The AWS partnership builds upon existing collaborations between the companies, with OpenAI's open-source models already available on Amazon's server infrastructure.
