"What Have You Accomplished In Past 4 Weeks": Elon Musk Asks xAI Staff To Revalidate Their Work
Elon Musk, xAI's CEO, has issued another directive to his employees requesting documentation of their recent accomplishments and future plans.
In an email sent Tuesday afternoon, Musk instructed all xAI staff members to "send a one-page summary of what you've accomplished in the past four weeks and what you intend to accomplish in the next four weeks." According to the email obtained by CNN, he set a deadline of "noon on Thursday."
This request coincides with a significant restructuring at xAI. Last week, the company reportedly dismissed over 500 data annotators, primarily from its generalist AI tutor team, as reported by Reuters. The company is pivoting toward specialized AI instructors in fields including STEM, finance, medicine, and safety.
xAI communicated to employees about reducing generalist AI tutors. When asked for comment, the company referenced a post on X stating they were recruiting across various domains and planned to expand their specialized AI tutor workforce "10X."
Specialist AI tutors at xAI are adding huge value. We will immediately surge our Specialist AI tutor team by 10x!We are hiring across domains like STEM, finance, medicine, safety, and many more. Come join us to help build truth-seeking AGI!https://t.co/htpc2RijLG

This isn't the first time Musk has required staff to justify their contributions. In August 2024, The Verge reported that employees needed to submit one-page summaries of their contributions to receive stock options, which would be allocated based on expected impact.
During Musk's collaboration with the White House and Department of Government Efficiencies, he sent mass emails to federal employees requesting highlights of their weekly achievements, declaring on X that "failure to respond will be considered as a resignation."
When Musk initially acquired Twitter in 2022, he had a peculiar request for staff members to print out their recent code contributions, only to then instruct them to destroy the printed materials.
Musk established xAI in 2023 as a counter to what he perceived as excessive censorship and inadequate safety measures in Big Tech's AI developments. The company powers the AI chatbot Grok, which is integrated with the X social network.
