India clinched a historic 52-run victory over South Africa on Sunday in the Women's World Cup final.
The DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai witnessed a momentous occasion as Team India secured their first-ever ICC Women's World Cup trophy. The thrilling final against South Africa had spectators captivated throughout the match. Following this landmark achievement, celebrations erupted across India, with prominent Indian-origin business leaders and global figures joining millions in extending congratulations to the "Women in Blue."
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared on X: "Women in Blue = World Champions! Respect to South Africa for making their first-ever final. A truly historic day for women's cricket - new chapters written, barriers broken, legends born."
Google CEO Sundar Pichai drew parallels to previous cricket triumphs, stating: "That was a nail-biting women's World Cup cricket final, memories of 1983 and 2011 indeed. Congrats to team India, I'm sure it will inspire a whole generation. Great tournament from South Africa too."
The references to 1983 and 2011 evoke significant milestones in Indian cricket history - Kapil Dev's team winning India's inaugural World Cup at Lord's in 1983, and MS Dhoni's squad reclaiming the title on home soil in 2011.
Under Harmanpreet Kaur's captaincy and with exceptional performances from Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and Smriti Mandhana, the Indian team delivered a comprehensive performance to secure their first world title in women's cricket.
Batting first, India posted an impressive 298/7. Shafali Verma contributed 87 runs, while Deepti Sharma added 58. Smriti Mandhana (45) and Richa Ghosh (34) made valuable contributions. The innings began strongly with a 100-run opening partnership between Mandhana and Verma.
South Africa's chase started promisingly with openers Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt establishing a 50-run partnership. However, a precise direct hit from Amanjot Kaur triggered a batting collapse. Young pace bowler Sree Charani made an immediate impact in her first over, while Shafali Verma excelled with the ball, dismissing both Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession.
Deepti Sharma emerged as the standout performer, claiming 5 wickets for 39 runs and devastating South Africa's middle order. Despite Laura Wolvaardt's valiant century (101), South Africa was dismissed for 246, securing India's 52-run triumph and their historic first World Cup title.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced a substantial reward of Rs 51 crore for the victorious team and support staff.
