Kamala Harris delivered a scathing critique of President Donald Trump's priorities, focusing on his controversial proposal to build a $300 million ballroom at the White House. The planned expansion would reportedly require demolishing the East Wing, coming at a time when millions of Americans face potential loss of food assistance during the ongoing government shutdown.
During her appearance on The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart podcast, the former vice president expressed her outrage in stark terms. "Are you f**king kidding me?" Harris exclaimed. "This guy wants to create a ballroom for his rich friends while completely turning a blind eye to the fact that babies are going to starve when the SNAP benefits end in just hours from now. Come on."
Harris continued her criticism of what she characterized as Trump's obsession with grandiosity and self-image. "I'm not going to be distracted by, 'Oh, does the guy have a big f**king hammer?' What about those babies?" she remarked, highlighting the contrast between the luxurious construction project and the dire situation facing low-income families.
The ambitious project, with its $300 million price tag, would replace the East Wing with an expansive 90,000-square-foot event venue. While the White House has emphasized that the project would be funded entirely through private donations rather than taxpayer money, Democratic critics view the plan as an egregious display of extravagance during a time of widespread economic hardship.
According to White House statements, funding for the project has been secured from major technology companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Google, and Meta. Various cryptocurrency firms have also contributed, such as Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Tether Holdings.
The government shutdown has already disrupted federal food assistance programs supporting nearly 40 million Americans, with healthcare subsidies under the Affordable Care Act also at risk.
Harris called for immediate action, accusing Trump of abandoning working families through misaligned spending priorities. "It costs $8 billion to keep SNAP going for poor children? Come on. And taxpayer dollars, by the way," she stated, referencing Trump's earlier $20 billion bailout to Argentina.
