The FBI has defended Director Kash Patel's use of government aircraft for personal travel, confirming that his actions fully comply with federal regulations.
FBI Assistant Director for Public Affairs Ben Williamson dismissed the controversy as "disingenuous and dumb," explaining that FBI Directors are designated as "required use travelers" under federal law.
According to Williamson's statement on social media platform X, Congress mandates that FBI Directors must use government aircraft for all travel, including personal trips. This requirement ensures continuous access to secure communications equipment in case of emergencies.
"They're actually barred from flying commercial," Williamson clarified, adding that Director Patel reimburses the government in advance for personal travel in strict accordance with Office of Management and Budget guidelines.
Williamson highlighted cost-saving measures implemented during Patel's tenure, noting that the current Director often selects government airfields instead of commercial airports like DCA (Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport), which saves nearly 2.5 times the cost and potentially "millions over time" for taxpayers.
In contrast, Williamson pointed out that former Directors Chris Wray and James Comey frequently chose more expensive travel options. Wray reportedly took 772 trips during his directorship, with approximately two-thirds departing from DCA at a cost of around $3.9 million (approximately Rs 32.5 crore) – roughly $2.2 million (Rs 18.3 crore) more than if government airfields had been utilized.
Similarly, Comey took nearly 500 trips, about half from DCA, costing over $1.8 million (Rs 15 crore), approximately $1 million (Rs 8.3 crore) more than Patel's preferred cost-saving approach would have incurred.
Williamson emphasized that Patel "rarely takes personal trips" and maintains a 24/7 work schedule. "Kash himself has significantly limited personal travel but he's allowed to take personal time on occasion to see family, friends or his longtime girlfriend. He doesn't do it often. He works far more full weekends than he does otherwise," stated Williamson.
Rather than focusing on travel arrangements, Williamson suggested critics should acknowledge the FBI's performance improvements under Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino in 2025. The agency reported impressive statistics, including 29,000 arrests (over 100% increase from the previous year), 6,000 illegal firearms confiscated, 5,000 child victims rescued (35% increase), 1,600 kg of fentanyl seized (25% increase), and 300 human traffickers arrested (10% increase).
"This FBI is delivering and it's because of a great team working incredibly hard with Kash Patel and Dan Bongino at the helm. We have zero time for people who peddle trash because they have nothing better to do," Williamson concluded.
The controversy stemmed from reports that Patel used a $60 million Department of Justice jet to attend a wrestling event in Nashville where his singer-girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, was performing.
