Trump Administration Tackles H-1B Visa Abuse: New Measures to Protect American Workers

The Trump administration has launched initiatives to combat H-1B visa abuse, including Project Firewall and a $100,000 petition fee. A Department of Labour video highlights that 72% of visa holders are Indians and accuses companies of unfairly replacing American workers with lower-paid foreign labor. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also ordered state universities to prioritize hiring Americans over foreign workers on visas.

A new video released by the Trump administration's Department of Labour on social media has accused companies of misusing the H-1B visa program. The video highlights that Indians make up 72 percent of visa holders, while Chinese nationals account for 12 percent.

'American Dream For Americans': US Calls Out H-1B Visa 'Abuse' In New Video

According to the video, the "American Dream" has been taken from Americans, with jobs unfairly allocated to lower-paid foreign workers. The video places blame on "politicians and bureaucrats" for permitting companies to exploit the H-1B visa system.

The narrator states, "Under the President of the United States and Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer leadership, we're holding companies accountable for their abuse and recapturing the American Dream for the AMERICAN PEOPLE".

The video presentation features 'happy' footage of people, families and homes from the 1950s contrasted with contemporary statistics.

In September, the Department of Labour introduced Project Firewall, an H-1B enforcement initiative designed to protect the rights, wages and job opportunities of American workers by ensuring employers prioritize them over foreign workers.

Through Project Firewall, employers will be investigated to maximize H-1B program compliance. Any violations will result in collection of back wages owed to affected workers, assessment of civil money penalties, and/or debarment from future participation in the H-1B program for a specified period, according to a Department of Labour press release.

The 51-second video referenced this initiative and concluded with the message: "Through Project Firewall, we're taking action to hold companies accountable for H-1B abuse and ensure they prioritise Americans in the hiring process, recapturing the American Dream for the American people."

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in September implementing a new $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions, describing it as a measure to reduce dependence on foreign workers. Employers intending to hire new foreign workers will need to pay this fee when submitting an H-1B petition.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday directed state institutions to hire Americans for university positions and end the practice of bringing in foreign workers on work visas.

"Universities across the country are importing foreign workers on H-1B visas instead of hiring Americans who are qualified and available to do the job," DeSantis stated on Wednesday.

"We will not tolerate H-1B abuse in Florida institutions. That's why I have directed the Florida Board of Governors to end this practice," he added.

DeSantis further suggested that if universities are having difficulty finding qualified US citizens to fill positions, they should evaluate their academic programs to determine why they are unable to produce graduates suitable for these roles.
