A Canadian court has sentenced Balraj Basra, a man of Indian origin, to 25 years imprisonment for the first-degree murder and arson related to the 2022 shooting death of Vishal Walia at a University of British Columbia golf club. Basra is the third person convicted in this case, following earlier sentencing of accomplices Iqbal Kang and Deandre Baptiste who received 17 years and life imprisonment respectively.

An Indian-origin individual has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Canadian court for his involvement in a 2022 homicide case, according to local media sources.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of British Columbia jury found Balraj Basra guilty of first-degree murder and arson, as reported by City News.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed that Basra is the third individual convicted in connection with the fatal shooting of Vishal Walia at a golf club located on University of British Columbia property on October 17, 2022, CBC reported Wednesday.

The other two convicted individuals, Iqbal Kang and Deandre Baptiste, received their sentences earlier.

Kang was given a 17-year prison term plus an additional concurrent five-year sentence for arson, while Baptiste received a life sentence with no possibility of parole for 17 years.

According to reports, the three convicted individuals set fire to a vehicle after fatally shooting 38-year-old Vishal Walia in October 2022, prompting police response.

Officers from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) quickly identified the suspects who fled the scene in another vehicle.

The British Columbia Highway Patrol, Richmond Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the VPD collaborated to apprehend the suspects minutes later.
