US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed hundreds of costumed children to the White House for the annual Halloween celebration on Thursday evening.
The presidential couple emerged on the South Lawn as dusk settled in, greeted by the melodic orchestral rendition of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." President Trump opted for his characteristic blue suit and red tie complemented by a red "USA" cap, while the First Lady appeared elegant in a brown coat over an orange dress.
The White House grounds were transformed with seasonal decorations featuring large autumn leaves and vibrant fall flowers including orange and red chrysanthemums. The staircase leading to the balcony was adorned with numerous intricately carved pumpkins creating a festive atmosphere.
Children and their parents formed a lengthy queue down the driveway, eagerly awaiting their turn to meet the President and First Lady. The couple distributed full-sized Hershey chocolate bars and Twizzlers packaged in special boxes bearing the presidential seal.
"It's a long line," President Trump remarked to attendees. "It's almost as big as the ballroom," he added, referencing the ongoing construction of the new White House ballroom which has necessitated demolition of the East Wing.
The Halloween celebration proceeded despite several challenging circumstances. President Trump had returned mere hours earlier from an extensive six-day diplomatic tour across Asia, visiting Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. Additionally, the festivities occurred against the backdrop of a government shutdown entering its 30th day.
The political impasse continues as congressional Democrats demand extension of expiring tax credits that help millions access health insurance, while Republicans refuse negotiation until government operations resume.
Market analysts note that Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports have affected Halloween merchandise in the United States, reducing inventory and increasing prices for costumes and decorations for American businesses and consumers.
Attendees primarily included children of military personnel and White House staff members. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brought her young son dressed as a pumpkin. Former Trump administration aide Katie Miller appeared as a skeleton, while her husband Stephen, serving as Deputy White House Chief of Staff, attended in formal business attire.
The children's costumes ranged from superheroes like Spider-Man and Captain America to ballerinas, princesses, and leprechauns. Two boys creatively dressed as mini-versions of President Trump himself, complete with suits and signature "USA" caps, though without attempting to replicate his distinctive hairstyle. Accompanying them was a young girl dressed in a white coat over a dress reminiscent of the First Lady's fashion style.
Several parents also wore "USA" caps matching the President's headwear. While some children appeared shy when meeting the presidential couple, President Trump was observed engaging warmly with the young guests, including a child in a humorous inflatable toilet costume labeled "Wide Load."
