The suspect was taken into custody on Monday in connection with the attack.
London:
A suspect detained for the alleged racially motivated sexual assault of a woman of Indian heritage in Walsall has been formally charged with rape and made an initial court appearance at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
According to West Midlands Police, the accused, identified as John Ashby, "who is a white British man aged 32 from Stockland Green," received formal charges on Tuesday evening.
The rape accusation follows an incident involving a woman in her twenties, locally identified as a Sikh student, who was attacked in Walsall's Park Hall neighborhood on Saturday evening.
"He was also charged with sexual assault, strangulation, racially aggravated actual bodily harm and robbery," police officials stated.
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer from the West Midlands Police Public Protection Unit, who is overseeing the investigation, confirmed that the victim has been informed of the charges filed against the suspect.
"She is continuing to be supported by our specially-trained officers," he added.
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of the Walsall Police assured that his team will maintain their presence and community engagement in the neighborhood, which has been deeply affected by the incident.
"We know the fear and concern this attack has caused in our communities. We continue to speak to people in the community to listen to and understand their concerns," Dolby explained.
"Officers have visited faith establishments in Walsall and spoken with local leaders about women's safety and what measures men can take to make women feel more comfortable.
"We need to continue to maintain those conversations and how we build on women's safety in the community," he emphasized.
Residents of the normally peaceful, tree-lined Park Hall area in Walsall expressed their dismay earlier this week following the weekend assault. UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the incident as a "horrific crime".
"I know the fear that will be felt by the local Sikh community. I've sought assurances from the police and local leaders that they are doing all they can to support everyone impacted by this crime," she stated.
On Sunday, authorities released CCTV footage of the suspect, described as a white man in his thirties, after police were called to the Park Hall area of Walsall on Saturday evening following "concerns for the welfare of a woman in distress in the street". The suspect's arrest occurred on Monday.
This incident follows another racially aggravated sexual assault of a British Sikh woman in her twenties in nearby Oldbury last month. West Midlands police have yet to make charges in that ongoing investigation.
"The repeated pattern of violence against women in our region, compounded by hate and racial overtones, is deeply disturbing," stated Preet Kaur Gill, British Sikh Labour MP for Birmingham Edgbaston.
