A 21-year-old Indian truck driver facing charges for causing a deadly collision in California has sparked outrage within the Sikh community after appearing in court without his turban. Following this incident, a petition has been initiated demanding the immediate restoration of his religious headwear.
Jashanpreet Singh entered a not guilty plea to charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence during his recent court appearance. The accident on October 21 near Ontario, California, involved eight vehicles, resulting in three fatalities and four injuries.
A Change.org petition addressed to the Media Regulatory Authority and local law enforcement has strongly criticized what it describes as unjust treatment of Singh. The petition condemns American authorities for allowing his court appearance without his turban, calling it a violation of his religious identity and an insult to Sikh values.
"Jashanpreet has been stripped of his turban—a deeply meaningful symbol of his faith and identity. This action violates not only his personal beliefs but attacks our entire community's cultural and religious values," the petition states.
Court documents reveal that Singh, who resides in Yuba City, entered the United States illegally from India in 2022 but possesses Employment Authorization Documents valid until 2030 and a commercial driver's license. He remains detained without bail with another court appearance scheduled for November 4, where a Punjabi interpreter will be provided.
The petition also criticizes media outlets for circulating unverified claims about Singh's alleged drug use, arguing that sensationalized coverage has damaged his reputation and disregarded the principle of "innocent until proven guilty."
Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal has also spoken out against Singh's treatment. "The distressing images of Jashanpreet being produced in court bareheaded, which violates his Sikh identity, intensifies our concern. Let justice prevail with mercy," he posted on social media platform X.
Badal mentioned that Singh's family informed him the toxicology reports contained "a serious error that should be reviewed."
He has called on US authorities to ensure a fair investigation and has appealed to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to take appropriate measures to safeguard Singh's rights.
