Wikipedia has established an entry about Grokipedia, its AI-powered competitor developed by Elon Musk's xAI.
New Delhi:
Wikipedia, globally recognized as the largest encyclopedia platform, has now created a dedicated page for Grokipedia, the new AI-powered encyclopedia developed by xAI.
The Wikipedia entry appeared shortly after Grokipedia's official launch on October 27. The page describes Grokipedia as an "artificial intelligence-powered online encyclopedia developed by xAI, an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk."
According to the entry, Musk has introduced Grokipedia as a Wikipedia alternative that aims to "purge out the propaganda" which he believes permeates the established platform.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has frequently criticized Wikipedia for what he perceives as bias resulting from its community-editing approach.
Grokipedia currently features over 885,000 AI-generated articles, reportedly written and verified by xAI's chatbot Grok. However, Wikipedia notes that many Grokipedia articles appear to be direct duplications from Wikipedia's own platform, with minimal differences from the original content.
The entry further highlights that certain Grokipedia articles have been modified to align with Musk's personal perspectives on controversial topics such as gender transition or former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal. Wikipedia also suggests that Grokipedia content tends to favor Musk.
Wikipedia has additionally accused Grokipedia of disseminating misinformation. Citing a Wired article, the page notes that Grokipedia makes unsubstantiated claims, such as pornography worsening the AIDS epidemic and social media potentially causing increases in transgender identification.
The page references NBC News reporting that Grokipedia's article about Elon Musk omits the controversial hand gesture he made in January 2025, widely interpreted as resembling a Nazi salute. In contrast, Wikipedia's own entry on Musk includes this information.
A Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson stated that "Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist," dismissing Musk's allegations of Wikipedia bias.
At the conclusion of the entry, Wikipedia links to several related pages, including "Reliability of Wikipedia," "Criticism of Wikipedia," "Conservapedia" (a Christian-focused encyclopedia), and "Ruwiki" (designed for the Russian community). It also references "Algorithmic bias," which explains how technical systems can produce unfair outcomes by favoring certain groups over others.
Earlier in the day, Musk announced on X that an early version of Grokipedia was now live. He labeled the current release as version 0.1, indicating it was just the beginning, with the forthcoming 1.0 version promising significant advancements.
While Musk claimed his AI-powered encyclopedia already surpassed Wikipedia in quality despite being in its earliest form, this assertion was not included in Wikipedia's entry about its new competitor.
