Donald Trump declared on Monday that he would not pursue the vice presidency in the 2028 American election, a strategy some supporters have suggested could enable him to circumvent term limits and remain in the White House.
According to the US Constitution, presidents are limited to two terms, and Trump began serving his second term in January.
Nevertheless, some of his supporters have proposed that the Republican could bypass this restriction by becoming vice president and then assuming the presidency if the position became vacant.
When questioned about whether he would run for vice president in November 2028, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he "would be allowed to do that".
However, he continued: "I wouldn't do it... I think it's too cute. It wouldn't be right."
Trump, who served his first term from 2017 to 2021, frequently mentions that his supporters have called for him to continue governing beyond his current term, despite the constitutional limitation.
The 79-year-old businessman has also recently displayed red hats featuring the slogan "Trump 2028" on a desk in the Oval Office.
A theory popular among his supporters suggests that the current vice president, JD Vance, could run for president in 2028 with Trump as his running mate.
According to this theory, if Vance won, he would promptly resign, allowing Trump to return to office.
Trump's statements came after Steve Bannon, his former advisor and one of the key ideologues of the Make America Great Again movement, claimed "there is a plan" to keep him in the White House.
"He is going to get a third term... Trump is going to be president in '28. And people just ought to get accommodated with that," Bannon told The Economist.
When asked about the 22nd Amendment -- the constitutional article that mandates term limits -- Bannon responded: "There's many different alternatives. At the appropriate time, we'll lay out what the plan is."
