Detective Alicia Stone, a 40-year-old NYPD officer and mother of three, has died one week after undergoing cosmetic procedures in Colombia, according to reports from the New York Post.
Stone, who had served 13 years with the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau, was discovered unresponsive in her hotel room in Colombia and rushed to Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital on Thursday. Medical personnel pronounced her dead approximately an hour later.
According to sources familiar with the case, her official cause of death was documented as "unspecified cardiac arrest." The detective had undergone liposuction and a gluteal fat transfer procedure on October 16, just seven days before her death.
Following the surgery, Stone had been prescribed anticoagulants and pain medication as part of her post-operative care. She was reportedly staying at a hotel during her recovery period.
Michael Stone, her husband, expressed his intention to request a comprehensive autopsy and investigation into the circumstances of her unexpected death. "The doctor who called me from Colombia just told me my wife had passed away. She didn't provide any information when I asked questions... Something just doesn't add up," he stated.
"Being told on Thursday that she had passed away was shocking and devastating. I need to know the facts of what happened," he added.
According to Michael, his wife appeared to be "perfectly fine" before undergoing the procedure. He noted that she had communicated with family members just a day before her death, indicating she was feeling well.
A fundraiser established for Stone's family described her as a devoted mother and dedicated public servant who had committed her career to protecting her community. "Alicia's kindness, courage, and compassion touched everyone she met, both in and out of uniform. Her unexpected passing has left a tremendous void in the lives of her family, friends, and fellow officers," the fundraiser stated.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons defines a gluteal fat transfer, commonly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), as a procedure that relocates fat from other body areas to enhance the buttocks.
Medical experts warn that while complications are rare, serious issues like fat embolism can occur, particularly if fat is injected into the muscle, potentially leading to fatal outcomes.
Following Stone's death, authorities reportedly contacted the Colombian National Police, the US State Department, and consular services officials. Her husband also stated that the NYPD had dispatched a detective to Colombia to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
