Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the successful completion of final tests for a new nuclear-powered cruise missile known as the Burevestnik.
During a meeting with military officials, Putin announced, "The decisive tests are now complete," as shown in video footage released by the Kremlin.
He has instructed preparation of the necessary infrastructure to incorporate this weapon into the Russian armed forces.
Putin described the Burevestnik as a "unique creation that no one else in the world possesses" with "unlimited range" capabilities.
According to Russia's military chief of staff Valery Gerasimov, the most recent test on October 21 demonstrated the missile's impressive performance, flying for approximately 15 hours and covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles). Gerasimov noted this does not represent the weapon's maximum capabilities.
"The technical characteristics of the Burevestnik allow it to be used with guaranteed precision against highly protected sites located at any distance," Gerasimov stated.
Putin initially revealed the development of these missiles in 2018, claiming they could evade all defense systems, addressing what Russia perceived as threats from the United States.
This announcement comes at a time when Russian forces are gradually advancing in Ukraine, breaking through Kyiv's defenses in costly battles.
Peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv have reached an impasse despite mediation efforts from US President-elect Donald Trump, who had pledged to swiftly end the conflict upon his return to office in January.
Trump recently imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, expressing frustration that his conversations with Putin regarding ending the Ukraine war "don't go anywhere."
On Saturday, Trump downplayed the possibility of another summit with Putin, stating he was "not going to be wasting my time."
These comments followed meetings between Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev and Trump administration officials on Friday and Saturday, according to a Russian source familiar with the discussions. The talks are expected to continue.
Putin indicated on Sunday that he would not set a specific timeline for ending hostilities, saying, "We are not going to align anything with any dates or events... we will base our actions on military rationality."
Meanwhile, an overnight Russian drone attack on Kyiv resulted in three fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to the Ukrainian capital's mayor.
In Russia's Belgorod region, Ukrainian drone strikes killed one person and wounded another, as reported by the local governor.
