Dubai's Revolutionary V2X Smart Traffic System: AI-Powered Connectivity Transforming Road Travel by 2028

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority is implementing an advanced V2X smart traffic management system across 620 intersections by 2028. This AI-powered network will connect vehicles directly to traffic infrastructure, providing real-time dashboard updates on signal countdowns, optimal speeds, and accident alerts. With built-in connectivity for new vehicles and integration options for existing ones, the system aims to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and position Dubai as a global leader in intelligent traffic management.

AI-Powered Traffic System To Transform Driving In Dubai By 2028

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to revolutionize traffic management with the implementation of V2X, an advanced smart traffic network system. This innovative technology will establish direct connections between traffic signals and vehicles throughout the city.

As a key component of Dubai's Smart Connected Vehicles project, the V2X system will deliver crucial real-time road information directly to drivers via their vehicle dashboards.

The comprehensive network is planned for implementation across approximately 620 intersections between 2027 and 2028. Drivers will receive valuable updates including signal countdowns, optimal speeds for crossing intersections, and immediate accident alerts. The primary objectives are reducing congestion, enhancing road safety, and optimizing traffic efficiency throughout Dubai.

Gulf News reports that RTA officials have already initiated discussions with automobile manufacturers to incorporate built-in connectivity in upcoming vehicle models. For existing vehicles, this functionality will be available through add-on devices or integration with platforms like CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling drivers to access real-time traffic information without needing to handle mobile phones.

Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi, director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA's Traffic and Roads Department, explained that the V2X system will be fundamental to Dubai's future traffic signal operations. The network will be integrated with the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre (DITSC) and utilize artificial intelligence to optimize signal timing and enhance traffic flow management.

The system supports diverse mobility options through ITS-C interactive technology, facilitating data exchange between vehicles and infrastructure. Leveraging digital twin technology, the platform can simulate various traffic scenarios, analyze intersection performance, and test solutions before real-world implementation.

Drivers will benefit from comprehensive real-time information regarding traffic lights, congestion levels, route diversions, and road closures. Future updates will introduce vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication capabilities, allowing vehicles to share warnings about upcoming obstacles or slow traffic conditions.

Al Marzooqi highlighted that this initiative aims to minimize driver distraction by displaying essential traffic updates directly on vehicle dashboards, thereby improving road safety and helping prevent accidents.

All 620 of Dubai's existing signalized intersections will be incorporated into this centralized network. The system will employ AI-powered cameras and sophisticated analytics to monitor vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in real time, ensuring rapid responses to changing traffic conditions.

The infrastructure for this ambitious project is expected to be completed within two years, followed by integration processes and pilot testing before full implementation between 2027 and 2028. Upon completion, this system is anticipated to position Dubai among the world's leading cities in intelligent traffic management technology.
