What Is ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's AI-Powered Super-Assistant Web Browser

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas on Tuesday, an innovative web browser that integrates its renowned AI chatbot into the browsing experience. This launch positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to Google Chrome, with the goal of transforming how users browse, search, and complete online tasks through a more conversational, efficient, and personalized approach.

ChatGPT Atlas represents a new generation of web browsers with ChatGPT functionality embedded throughout the browsing experience. Users can interact with the AI assistant directly on any webpage without switching between tabs or copying and pasting content. Atlas functions as a comprehensive "super-assistant" designed to help users find information, complete tasks, and manage their online activities more efficiently.

Currently, Atlas is available worldwide for macOS users with Free, Plus, Pro, and Go subscriptions, while Business users can access it in beta. Enterprise and Education users can utilize Atlas if their plan administrators enable the feature. OpenAI has announced that Windows, iOS, and Android versions will be released soon.

To install ChatGPT Atlas on macOS, visit chatgpt.com/atlas and download the macOS version. After opening the downloaded .dmg file, drag the ChatGPT Atlas icon to your Applications folder. Launch ChatGPT Atlas from Applications or via Spotlight search, then sign in with your existing ChatGPT account or create a new one. During setup, you can import bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from your current browser.

ChatGPT Atlas offers several distinctive features. Its Built-In Memory capability allows ChatGPT to remember past interactions and browsing context, such as summarizing previously viewed job listings or recalling notes from earlier research. These memories are optional and fully under user control—they can be viewed, archived, or deleted at any time.

The browser's Agent Mode enables ChatGPT to act on the user's behalf while browsing. It can conduct research, analyze information, automate tasks, plan events, and assist with booking appointments. This feature is currently available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users.

Transitioning to Atlas is seamless with its easy setup process. Users can import their bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from their existing browser for a smooth transition experience.

OpenAI has implemented various safeguards in Atlas to prevent misuse. ChatGPT cannot execute code, download files, or access other applications on the user's computer. Users can also operate Agent Mode in a "logged-out" state to restrict access to sensitive websites. While certain risks remain, such as potentially hidden malicious instructions, OpenAI states that they have implemented robust protective measures and will continue to monitor for vulnerabilities.

To set Atlas as your default browser, open ChatGPT Atlas, navigate to Settings and then General. Click Set default and select Use Atlas. Alternatively, go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser and select ChatGPT Atlas.
