"We Have A Deal On TikTok, Will Speak To Xi Jinping": Trump
US President Donald Trump announced Monday that an agreement has been reached with China regarding the Chinese app TikTok.
Washington:
President Trump revealed to reporters before his UK trip that the United States has finally secured a deal concerning TikTok.
Trump stated that he plans to communicate with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday about the agreement.
"We have a deal on TikTok. I've reached a deal with China. I'm going to speak to President Xi on Friday to confirm everything up," Trump announced.
Administration officials confirmed Monday that the Trump administration and China have finalized an agreement that will allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States, concluding a multi-year effort that began during Trump's first presidential term, according to CNN.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that a framework agreement has been established, and Trump will engage in conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday to finalize the details. US officials explained Monday that this agreement and upcoming discussion serve as preliminary steps toward a Trump-Xi meeting that both nations have been seeking for months.
"President Trump played a role in this, we had a call with him last night, we had specific guidance from him we shared it with our Chinese counterparts," Bessent said while in Madrid on Monday. "Without his leadership and the leverage he provides, we would not have been able to include the deal today," CNN reported.
TikTok temporarily became unavailable in the United States on January 18, one day before the Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act took effect. However, on January 19, the day before Trump began his second term, he indicated that upon taking office he would sign an executive action ensuring US companies would not face penalties for hosting TikTok on their app stores or servers.
The executive order, which Trump signed on January 20, postponed enforcement of the law for 75 days. Trump extended this deadline again in June. Most recently, the deadline had been pushed to September 17, though it was widely anticipated that Trump would further extend it if an agreement wasn't reached in time, according to CNN.
