Prince Andrew Asked Police To Dig Up Dirt On Sexual Abuse Accuser: Report

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed they are "actively looking" into allegations regarding Prince Andrew's conduct.

London:

According to a British newspaper report published on Sunday, Britain's Prince Andrew requested police in 2011 to gather personal information about Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse when she was a teenager. This report emerged just days after the royal relinquished his Duke of York title.

The Metropolitan Police in London stated they were "actively looking" into the allegations reported by the Mail on Sunday. Buckingham Palace did not provide an immediate response when asked for comment.

Andrew, King Charles's younger brother, announced on Friday that he would no longer use his title, following years of criticism regarding his behavior and his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, the late US sex offender.

He stated that the accusations - which he has consistently denied - were creating a distraction from the work of the king and other members of the royal family.

Sunday's report, however, indicates that this move has not successfully contained the scandal.

The 65-year-old Andrew stepped down from his role as a UK trade ambassador in 2011, subsequently withdrew from all royal duties in 2019, and was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages in 2022 amid sexual misconduct allegations.

That same year, he settled a lawsuit filed by Giuffre, who died by suicide in April, which alleged he sexually abused her during her teenage years. Andrew has consistently denied these claims, which have recently gained renewed attention following the publication of her memoir.

According to the Mail on Sunday report, Andrew asked one of his personal protection officers to gather information about his accuser, citing an email Andrew sent to Queen Elizabeth's deputy press secretary at that time.

The email reportedly shows Andrew claiming he provided police with Giuffre's date of birth and social security number, adding that he believed she had a criminal record in the United States.

Giuffre's family informed the newspaper that she did not have any criminal record.

The Mail on Sunday noted there is no indication that the officer complied with the request.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated: "We are aware of media reporting and are actively looking into the claims made."

British Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the new allegations as "deeply concerning" in comments to the BBC.
