Sundar Pichai Recalls Train Rides In India, Calls Vizag 'Beautiful Coastal Town'

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently reminisced about his childhood train journeys through South India, specifically mentioning Visakhapatnam (Vizag) as "a beautiful coastal town" that left an impression on him. This reflection comes in the wake of Google's announcement of a $15 billion investment over five years to establish an artificial intelligence data center in Andhra Pradesh, marking the company's largest investment in India to date.

According to Reuters, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has described the Andhra Pradesh facility as the company's "largest AI hub" outside the United States. During a conversation with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Pichai shared his personal connection to the region, saying, "I used to take this train through the south of India and there's this town called Vizag. It's a beautiful coastal town."

The Google CEO emphasized the significance of this new investment in Vizag, which will include a 1-gigawatt-plus AI data center with 80% clean energy power. Pichai expressed his vision that this project represents an opportunity to "transform a region like that," connecting his personal history with the company's strategic growth in India.

Pichai mentioned his pride in discussing the initiative with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, "It really meant a lot to be able to call the prime minister who really cares about developing the country." This investment aligns with Pichai's belief in technology as a transformative force, similar to the impact it had in his own life journey.

Speaking about artificial intelligence specifically, Pichai noted, "With AI, I think, we have a chance to do a step even more," highlighting the potential of this technology to create new opportunities for communities like Vizag.

During the conversation, Pichai also reflected on his upbringing in South India, which he credits with instilling "strong family values" and an "extraordinary focus on learning and knowledge." He recalled the technological limitations he faced growing up, mentioning that he "had to wait for every piece of technology for a long time... waited five years to get a rotary phone," and how these experiences shaped his appreciation for technology's transformative power.

According to Reuters, Google has committed approximately $85 billion this year to construct the data center in Visakhapatnam, furthering its significant investment in India's technological infrastructure.
