Former IIT Bombay Student Arrested for Secretly Recording Male Students in Hostel Bathrooms

The former MTech student completed his electrical engineering degree from IIT Bombay in July 2023.

Mumbai authorities have filed a case against a 32-year-old IIT Bombay alumnus who allegedly recorded videos of male students in hostel bathrooms without their consent, officials confirmed on Friday.

The incident was discovered on Thursday when the institute's security personnel filed a formal complaint at Powai police station regarding the unauthorized recording and distribution of private footage of students.

According to officials, the violations occurred on the fifth floor of hostel number 14 at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay campus in Powai.

The accused, who graduated with an MTech in electrical engineering from the institute in July this year, was reportedly still seeking employment.

Officials explained that the former student had gained temporary access to the campus for two days starting October 11 through a recommendation from a current student. During his stay at the hostel, he surreptitiously recorded videos of male students while they were showering and using restroom facilities.

The situation unfolded when several students caught the alumnus in the act and immediately escorted him to campus security personnel. Upon examining his mobile device, security staff discovered numerous unauthorized recordings of students using bathroom facilities.

Since no individual students came forward to press charges, the security inspector filed the official complaint on Thursday following instructions from the institute's administration.

Based on the security inspector's complaint, authorities have registered a case against the former student under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, and investigations are currently ongoing.
