US President Donald Trump delivered a stark message regarding Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Friday, stating that the Venezuelan leader has offered significant concessions to reduce tensions with Washington.
"He has offered everything, you're right. You know why? Because he doesn't want to fuck around with the United States," Trump remarked when questioned by a journalist at the White House about reports of Caracas proposing de-escalation plans.
The Trump administration has accused Maduro of leading a drug cartel and has deployed considerable military assets in the region, including stealth aircraft and seven US Navy vessels, as part of what it describes as counter-narcotics operations.
Earlier this week, US-based B-52 bombers conducted a show of force by circling over the Caribbean near Venezuela's coast for several hours, according to data from the flight tracking website Flightradar24.
The US military stated on Friday that these flights demonstrated "the US commitment to proactively deter adversary threats, enhance crew training, and ensure the global force readiness."
This military buildup has generated concerns in Caracas that the United States might be pursuing regime change in Venezuela.
Venezuela is allegedly the point of origin for some of at least six suspected drug-smuggling vessels targeted by US forces in an unprecedented campaign that has resulted in more than two dozen fatalities.
"We attacked a submarine, and that was a drug-carrying submarine built specifically for the transportation of massive amounts of drugs," Trump told journalists Friday when asked about reports of a strike that left several survivors.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, present alongside Trump, declined to confirm if there were survivors, indicating that additional information would likely be released later that day.
Washington has not provided evidence supporting its claims that the targets of these strikes are drug smugglers, and experts contend that such summary killings are illegal even if they target confirmed narcotics traffickers.
