Australia's Cabinet Minister Anne Aly has arrived in India as part of the Anthony Albanese administration's strategic initiative to strengthen relationships across the Indian Ocean region. The Minister for International Development, Multicultural Affairs and Small Business is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the prestigious NDTV World Summit this Friday at Bharat Mandapam.
During her address, Aly will emphasize the significant contributions of Indian-Australian communities in shaping Australia's national identity and how multiculturalism serves as a foundation for bilateral diplomatic relations.
This diplomatic visit represents Canberra's comprehensive strategy to enhance engagement throughout the Indian Ocean, integrating development initiatives, multicultural outreach programs, and regional stability measures within its foreign policy framework.
Anne Aly's journey began in Egypt, from where she migrated to Australia at the age of two with her family. She was raised in western Sydney and by her late twenties had established herself as a single working mother raising two young sons in Perth.
In 2016, Aly achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Muslim woman elected to Australia's federal parliament as the Member for Cowan, according to her Treasury portfolio records. Prior to her political career, she served as a professor at both Curtin University and Edith Cowan University, specializing in counterterrorism and countering violent extremism research.
Following the Albanese government's election in 2022, Aly broke new ground as Australia's first female Muslim minister, holding the portfolios of Early Childhood Education and Youth. Her achievements continued when, after the Albanese Labour Government's re-election in 2025, she became the first female Muslim appointed to a Cabinet position.
Aly has published numerous academic works and released her memoir "Finding My Place: From Cairo to Canberra" in 2018, documenting her remarkable personal and professional journey.
The NDTV World Summit 2025 is scheduled for October 17 and 18 in New Delhi at Bharat Mandapam. This prestigious event will explore three central themes: "Risk, Revolve and Renewal," bringing together distinguished voices and thought leaders from around the world.
