Pope Leo XIV Receives Purebred Arabian Horse "Proton" as Gift for Vatican Charity Auction

Pope Leo XIV was gifted a 12-year-old purebred Arabian horse named Proton from a Polish breeder, intended for charity auction to benefit the poor. The white horse with impressive bloodlines brought visible joy to the pontiff, continuing the tradition of unique papal gifts that serve charitable purposes.

Pope Leo XIV was presented with a 12-year-old white purebred Arabian horse named "Proton" on Wednesday, a gift from Polish breeder Andrzej Michalski, founder of the Michalski Stud Farm in northwestern Poland.

The Holy See witnessed a moment of delight as the new American pontiff's face lit up with joy upon seeing his four-legged gift before his general audience.

"The pope was extremely pleased; we walked the horse together. His delight was evident, and we were absolutely thrilled," Michalski shared with Vatican News.

The thoughtful gift was inspired by a photograph showing the pope, formerly Robert Prevost, riding horseback during his missionary service in Peru.

According to Michalski, Proton is intended for auction, with the proceeds designated to benefit the poor.

This distinguished equine, featuring a light grey-white coat with dark markings, comes from impressive bloodlines: sired by Kahil, an American-born horse from a Qatari breeding program, and out of Pradera, whose sire was bred by Jordan's Princess Alia Al Hussein.

It's customary for popes to receive various gifts from the faithful and visiting officials, which are frequently auctioned for charitable causes.

During his twelve-year papacy, Pope Francis received several notable gifts, including two donkeys and a Lamborghini specially painted in Vatican colors.
