Vinod Sekhar, a Malaysian-Indian businessman, faced a violent mugging outside a south London residence, but his wife's courageous intervention helped ward off the attackers.
In his detailed Facebook post titled "A Reminder That Life, Not Things, Matters Most," Sekhar, who serves as chairman and CEO of Petra Group, recounted how his pleasant family day turned dangerous after watching Hamilton in the West End.
"After enjoying a wonderful day with family in Oxford and watching Hamilton in the evening, we were returning to my daughter's apartment near Battersea Power Station," he shared on his Facebook account.
The peaceful evening abruptly changed when two assailants appeared suddenly, attacking Sekhar by grabbing him, slapping his thighs and chest, and forcibly removing his watch. During the assault, he sustained minor injuries, describing himself as "bruised, bleeding lightly, but relatively unscathed."
Sekhar mentioned that his ability to resist was compromised by his health condition and medication regimen following a transplant procedure. "I was rushed at, smothered, punched some times...and the watch had the watchband ripped off my wrist. I tried to struggle but could not - my post-transplant medications and health flat didn't permit it," he explained.
The situation changed dramatically when his wife, Winy Yeap, demonstrated remarkable bravery. She confronted the attackers, shouting and wielding her handbag, which apparently startled the muggers enough to make them retreat.
"Like the lioness she's always been, my wife jumped in, whipping her bag, yelling at them, fearless and defensive. The muggers ran off on electric Lime bikes in that instant," Sekhar proudly noted.
London Metropolitan police responded rapidly to the scene. One officer advised Sekhar that surrendering his possessions likely prevented more serious injury.
Reflecting on the incident, Sekhar compared safety in London to his hometown of Kuala Lumpur, expressing gratitude for the latter as "one of the most secure, warmest, most cosmopolitan cities in the world."
He philosophically observed, "A world where kindness still triumphs over cruelty, and where, though flawed, we are still a people of exceptional people."
The businessman emphasized that human lives and relationships far outweigh material possessions, cautioning travelers against displaying expensive items like watches or bags, assuming streets are safer than they might be.
"And if something similar occurs to you, forget about it. A watch, a wallet, a phone - all of these can be replaced. Your life, your people, your buddies can't," the multimillionaire advised.
"Be cautious. Stay secure. And be grateful - each day - for the things that can't be robbed," Sekhar concluded in his thoughtful reflection.
