Former President Joe Biden has begun radiation and hormone therapy to combat prostate cancer that was diagnosed earlier this year in May, according to an official spokesperson.
"As part of his treatment protocol for prostate cancer, President Biden is now undergoing radiation therapy combined with hormone treatment," the spokesperson stated.
The 82-year-old former president's office had previously disclosed in May that Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones, discovered after he experienced urinary symptoms and physicians found a prostate nodule.
"Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places," Biden shared on social media platform X. His son, Beau Biden, died from cancer in 2015.
"Thank you for lifting us up with love and support," he added in his message.
Biden's health has received increased scrutiny following the publication of a book detailing his deteriorating condition while campaigning last year for re-election against Donald Trump.
In July 2024, following a widely criticized debate performance against Trump, Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris subsequently lost the election to Trump, who began his second presidential term in January.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among men.
The condition is particularly common in elderly men, with research suggesting approximately 80 percent of men over 80 years of age have cancerous cells in their prostate gland.
While early detection often leads to successful treatment, prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer mortality in men, the organization reports.
Hormone therapy, a standard treatment approach, can reduce tumor size and slow cancer progression, though it is not curative.
Trump, 79, now the oldest person ever elected president, recently completed his second medical examination of the year on Friday, with his physician declaring him to be in "excellent overall health."
