Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand is set to undertake a diplomatic mission to India, Singapore, and China from October 12 to 17 (Canadian time) as part of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy initiatives, the Canadian government announced on Saturday.
"Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced she will travel to India, Singapore and China from October 12 to October 17 to advance bilateral relations and cooperation with these countries as part of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy," stated the official release from the Canadian government.
Anand's visit to India commences on October 13 (Indian time), where she is scheduled to hold meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. These discussions aim to establish a strategic cooperation framework focusing on trade diversification, energy transformation, and security matters. This diplomatic engagement comes as the Carney administration makes efforts to revitalize relations with India.
The Canadian Foreign Minister will also visit Mumbai to interact with business representatives from both Canada and India, focusing on investment opportunities, job creation, and economic collaboration between the two nations.
Anand tweeted, "For Canada to be strong at home, we need strong, stable partnerships abroad. I am building bridges and increasing cooperation with India, Singapore and China."
This visit follows the significant bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, in June, which aimed to address and improve the previously strained relationship.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had described the leaders' meeting as "very positive and constructive," noting that they agreed on "calibrated steps to bring stability back to the relationship."
"Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada have just a short while ago concluded a very positive and constructive meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit here in Kananaskis in Canada," Misri had stated previously.
The diplomatic renewal has been further strengthened by the appointment of new High Commissioners – Christopher Cooter representing Canada in New Delhi and Dinesh K. Patnaik serving as India's High Commissioner in Ottawa.
Last month, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with his Canadian counterpart, Nathalie G. Drouin, to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism, combating transnational organized crime, and intelligence sharing.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides recognized the momentum for rebuilding trust and expanding cooperation at the highest political levels. They engaged in productive discussions on advancing bilateral relations, particularly in areas of counterterrorism, combating transnational organized crime, and intelligence exchanges.
The officials agreed to work collaboratively toward establishing a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations.
Following her India visit, Anand will travel to Singapore to meet Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, aiming to "further strengthen Canada's cooperation with one of its most important partners in Southeast Asia," according to the statement.
As Canada and Singapore celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, Anand will highlight progress on the proposed Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and advocate for concluding negotiations by 2026.
For the final leg of her diplomatic tour, Anand will visit China to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi and continue discussions on the Canada-China Strategic Partnership, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"This meeting builds on the commitment made by Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Premier of China, Li Qiang, to regularise channels of communication between the two countries. The ministers will discuss the Canada-China Strategic Partnership, the evolving bilateral and global context, as well as issues of importance to the Canadian economy," the statement concluded.
