Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her unwavering commitment to democratic values in her homeland.
Upon receiving news of this prestigious honor, Machado expressed conviction that the opposition movement would ultimately succeed in establishing a peaceful democratic transition in Venezuela.
"We're still on the journey toward democracy. We're dedicating tremendous effort to achieve this goal, and I'm confident we will succeed," Machado stated during the notification call with Kristian Berg Harpviken, Director of the Nobel Institute and secretary of the Nobel Committee.
The emotional moment was captured in a video shared by the Nobel Foundation on social media, showing Harpviken visibly moved, his voice breaking as he delivered the news to Machado, who was awakened in pre-dawn hours to receive this momentous announcement.
With characteristic humility, Machado responded: "This represents the highest acknowledgment of the Venezuelan people, who truly deserve this recognition. I am merely one individual who certainly doesn't merit this honor personally."
This award comes in the context of Venezuela's controversial 2024 election, in which President Nicolas Maduro claimed victory in a process widely condemned by international observers as fraudulent. Despite Machado's substantial popularity in polls, she was prevented from participating as a candidate.
The Nobel Committee recognized Machado specifically "for her persistent efforts promoting democratic rights for Venezuelans and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
