The authorities have detained three men and three women in relation to the synagogue attack in Manchester.
Police officials confirmed Wednesday that the perpetrator of last week's violent attack on a synagogue in Manchester, which resulted in two worshippers losing their lives, declared his loyalty to the Islamic State organization.
According to counter-terrorism police, Jihad Al-Shamie, the attacker, contacted emergency services during his deadly assault on October 2 to express allegiance to the terrorist group.
The 35-year-old Al-Shamie was fatally shot by police officers outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester after he drove a vehicle into pedestrians, assaulted them with a knife, and attempted to enter the building forcibly.
Congregation members Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, perished in the attack, which occurred on Yom Kippur, Judaism's most sacred day. Police reports indicate that Daulby was unintentionally shot by an armed officer as he and fellow congregants were securing the synagogue to prevent Al-Shamie from entering. Three additional men remain hospitalized with severe injuries.
Authorities revealed that Al-Shamie was on bail for an alleged rape incident at the time of the attack, though he had not been formally charged.
As investigators work to determine whether the attacker operated independently, they have arrested three men and three women in the greater Manchester region on suspicion of "commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism."
On Saturday, a court granted law enforcement an additional five days to detain four suspects: two men aged 30 and 32, and two women aged 46 and 61. An 18-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were released without further action, according to police.
The authorities have not disclosed the identities of those arrested or their connections to Al-Shamie.
