Adair Mendes Dutra Junior, a 31-year-old Brazilian fashion influencer known as Junior Dutra, passed away on October 3 following reported complications from a "fox eyes" cosmetic procedure.
The "fox eyes" surgery, designed to create an elongated, cat-like appearance by lifting the outer corners of the eyes, was allegedly performed by celebrity surgeon Fernando Garbi in March.
During an interview with Feed TV in Brazil, Junior had previously described developing a severe facial infection after the procedure, with symptoms including facial swelling, bruising, and breathing difficulties.
Gean Souza, a friend of the influencer, told Brazilian magazine Quem that on October 3, Junior "became ill, experienced severe shortness of breath, and was rushed to the nearest public hospital emergency room."
According to documents obtained by Portal Leo Dias, a Brazilian news outlet, Junior had initiated legal action against Garbi before his death, alleging six crimes including illegal medical practice, fraud, and serious bodily harm. He had also formally requested an investigation into the surgeon.
In response to the situation, Garbi's legal representative issued a statement on Instagram denying any connection between the surgeon and Junior's death. The statement, written in Portuguese, claimed that contrary assertions were made by "individuals seeking momentary notoriety."
The lawyer further stated: "All legal measures, both civil and criminal, will be pursued against those responsible for the insults and slander, ensuring they are held accountable for the injuries perpetrated against Doctor Fernando."
