President Trump has insisted allies cease Russian oil purchases before taking further punitive actions against Moscow.
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen announced Tuesday she and US President Donald Trump had discussions regarding additional measures to intensify pressure on Russia regarding the Ukraine conflict.
"I experienced a productive conversation with (Trump) about enhancing our collaborative efforts to increase economic pressure on Russia through supplementary measures," she shared on X platform.
Von der Leyen indicated the European Commission would shortly unveil proposals for a 19th round of EU sanctions against Russia since Ukraine was invaded in 2022.
The package will incorporate measures targeting cryptocurrency, banking institutions, and energy sectors, according to her statement.
Trump has called for allies to halt Russian oil imports before proceeding with Moscow penalties, while also encouraging tariffs against China.
The 27-member European Union had previously prohibited most Russian oil imports following the Kremlin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is planning to eliminate all Russian oil and gas dependencies by the conclusion of 2027.
Von der Leyen suggested Brussels was looking to accelerate this timeline.
"Russia's war economy, fueled by revenues from fossil fuels, is financing the violence in Ukraine. To terminate this, the (European) Commission will propose accelerating the elimination of Russian fossil fuel imports," she stated.
