No Ban For Pakistan-Origin Doctor Who Left Patient During Operation To Have Sex With Nurse
A Pakistan-origin physician escaped professional disbarment after abandoning an anesthetized patient during surgery at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in a different room, according to BBC reports. The medical tribunal determined that Dr. Suhail Anjum presented a "very low risk" of repeating such serious professional misconduct.
The episode took place on September 16, 2023, when a coworker discovered the 44-year-old doctor in a "compromising position" with the nurse.
Reports indicate the consultant anesthetist had requested another nursing colleague to monitor the male patient while he purportedly went to use the restroom. Instead, he engaged in intimate activity with Nurse C in another operating theater within the hospital premises.

During the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) proceedings, testimony revealed that another nurse witnessed Nurse C "with her trousers around her knee area with her underwear on display" while Anjum, a married father of three children, was observed "tying up the cord of his trousers".
No prohibition despite "serious misconduct"
On Monday, the tribunal stated that Dr. Anjum "had put his own interests before those of the patient and his colleagues" and the incident "had the potential to distract Dr Anjum... and he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient's care".
Tribunal chairwoman Rebecca Miller affirmed that his actions were "significant enough to amount to misconduct that was serious".
Nevertheless, the tribunal noted that the doctor's behavior did not compromise patient safety, and Miller expressed confidence in his commitment not to repeat such an error.

Miller stated: "The tribunal considered that members of the public and the profession would understand the high level of scrutiny to which Dr Anjum had been subjected, and that a finding of serious misconduct would weigh heavily upon him."
"The tribunal was satisfied that this public finding of serious misconduct was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession and proper professional standards, and that there was not a necessity to make a finding of impaired fitness to practise for that purpose."
The tribunal has yet to determine whether to issue a warning on Dr. Anjum's professional registration.
