A nascent Japanese political party announced Tuesday its plans to implement an artificial intelligence system as its leader following the resignation of its unconventional founder after poor election results.
Founded in January by Shinji Ishimaru, former mayor of a small western Japanese city, the Path to Rebirth party operates without a formal policy platform, allowing members to establish their own political agendas.
Despite Ishimaru's surprising second-place finish in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial race through effective online campaigning, he stepped down from the party after it failed to secure any seats in recent upper house elections.
"The new leader will be AI," announced Koki Okumura during a press conference. The 25-year-old doctoral student in AI research at Kyoto University described himself as an assistant to the upcoming AI leader.
Specifics regarding the artificial intelligence system remain undetermined, including implementation timeline and methodology. Okumura, who will serve as the nominal party leader, recently won an internal contest to succeed Ishimaru.
According to Okumura, the AI will not direct members' political activities but will instead focus on organizational decisions such as resource allocation among party members.
While the Path to Rebirth has generated significant media interest, electoral success has proven elusive. All 42 of its candidates were defeated in the June Tokyo assembly election, and similarly, all 10 candidates who participated in the July upper house election failed to win seats.
