Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been sentenced to 50 months in prison following his convictions related to prostitution charges involving two former girlfriends.
Indian-origin Judge Arun Subramanian delivered the sentence on October 3, emphasizing that substantial punishment was necessary to uphold justice and convey a clear message to society.
According to The New York Times, Judge Subramanian stated the sentence was designed "to send a message to abusers and victims alike that exploitation and violence against women is met with real accountability."
Combs will serve an additional 36 months in prison with credit for time already served. The court also imposed a $500,000 fine and five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
While recognizing Combs' status as a "celebrated" and "iconic" figure in music, Judge Subramanian highlighted that the hip-hop mogul's history of extensive sexual and physical violence warranted a "substantial sentence," as reported by People.
The New York Times noted that Combs maintained a stoic demeanor in court as the judge reprimanded him for years of abuse and encouraged him to accept responsibility during his incarceration.
Judge Subramanian rejected the defense's portrayal of Combs' relationships with Casandra "Cassie" Ventura and another woman testifying as "Jane" as merely consensual interactions, according to BBC.
"You abused them, physically, emotionally and psychologically," the judge declared during the sentencing.
Emphasizing the enduring trauma experienced by both women, Judge Subramanian told Combs, "You had the money and the power to keep it going," adding that "This was subjugation."
The judge further condemned Combs' behavior, stating, "I know you feel like you are in a dark place now, but these crimes were serious ones, and your violence, coercion and abuse have had devastating consequences for the women involved, women who loved and depend on you."
Judge Subramanian dismissed characterizations of Combs as merely a casual participant in prostitution. The New York Times reported him saying, "You were no John. You were more than that, even if your currency was satisfying your sexual desires instead of money."
Addressing Ventura, "Jane," and other victims directly, the judge offered words of support: "I know your families are proud of you, and your children, when they are old enough, will be proud of you. And I am proud of you for coming to the Court to tell the world what really happened," as reported by People.
The judge encouraged Combs to reflect and rebuild during his sentence, urging him to use his influence positively. "We all have voices. You have a megaphone," he remarked.
Judge Subramanian also praised those who testified against Combs, noting they spoke for many others who had experienced abuse. According to AP, he said, "You gave them a voice. You stood up to power."
Before receiving his sentence, Combs addressed the court and apologized to his victims, specifically naming Ventura and "Jane."
"My actions were disgusting, shameful and sick," he said according to BBC reporting. The music mogul also expressed remorse to his mother and children, stating, "I'm so sorry. They deserved better."
Combs pleaded with Judge Subramanian for leniency, promising never to jeopardize time with his family again. "I ask your honour for mercy. I beg your honour for mercy," Combs said, as reported by BBC, adding, "I don't have nobody to blame but myself. I know that I've learned my lesson."
