Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged a "significant" retaliation to what he describes as Europe's increasing militarization, speaking at a foreign policy forum in southern Russia on Thursday.
The relationship between Russia and the European Union has deteriorated significantly since Moscow initiated its military operation in Ukraine, prompting the bloc to strengthen its defensive capabilities.
"We are carefully observing the militarization taking place across Europe," Putin stated to forum attendees. "Russia's retaliatory measures will be implemented promptly. Our response to such threats will be very substantial."
Putin emphasized that "Russia will never demonstrate weakness or hesitation" in its approach.
Recent incidents involving drones in Denmark and airspace violations by Russian aircraft in Estonia and Poland have intensified concerns about potential expansion of the Ukraine conflict beyond its current boundaries.
The Russian leader accused European nations of fostering "hysteria" to justify increased military expenditures, insisting that Russia poses no threat. "Just calm down," Putin remarked.
He contended that Russia is effectively battling the entire NATO alliance in Ukraine and ridiculed US President Donald Trump's characterization of Russia as a "paper tiger."
"If we are allegedly fighting the whole NATO bloc while advancing confidently, yet still being labeled a paper tiger, then what exactly does that make NATO itself?" Putin questioned.
Putin also attributed responsibility to Kyiv for attacks near the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, warning that Moscow might respond with similar tactics.
Europe's largest nuclear facility, currently in cold shutdown mode, recently experienced its longest power outage to date, lasting over a week.
Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of targeting the power infrastructure supporting the facility.
