The US has implemented new military regulations requiring "gender-neutral" or "male-level" physical fitness standards for all troops.
President Donald Trump expressed his desire to utilize American cities as training grounds for armed forces during an unprecedented gathering of high-ranking military officials in Virginia. Alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump announced the termination of what they termed "woke" culture in the military.
Hegseth unveiled new directives mandating "gender-neutral" or "male-level" physical fitness requirements, while Trump boasted about American nuclear capabilities and warned that "America is under invasion from within."
"After spending trillions of dollars defending the borders of foreign countries, with your help we're defending the borders of our country," Trump declared.
Hegseth had summoned military leaders to the Marine Corps base in Quantico near Washington without previously disclosing the purpose. His address primarily focused on his assertion that the military has been constrained by "woke" policies, stating that military leaders should "do the honourable thing and resign" if they disagree with his new approach.
While meetings between military leadership and civilian officials are common, this particular assembly generated significant speculation due to its hasty arrangement and mysterious nature.
Admirals and generals from Middle Eastern conflict zones and other regions were called in for a presentation on race and gender in the military, highlighting how America's culture wars have become a central focus for Hegseth's Pentagon, despite numerous global security concerns.
Trump, accustomed to enthusiastic supporters who appreciate his humor and applaud his claims, received a notably different reception from the military leaders present.
Maintaining the nonpartisan tradition of the armed services, the military officials remained expressionless throughout Trump's politically charged remarks, contrasting sharply with the cheers from enlisted personnel during Trump's previous address at Fort Bragg.
In his nearly hour-long speech, Hegseth claimed the US military has elevated too many leaders based on inappropriate criteria including race, gender quotas and "historic firsts."
"The era of politically correct, overly sensitive, don't-hurt-anyone's-feelings leadership ends right now at every level," Hegseth stated.
Trump reinforced this sentiment, saying, "The purpose of the American military is not to protect anyone's feelings. It's to protect our republic."
"We will not be politically correct when it comes to defending American freedom," Trump added. "And we will be a fighting and winning machine."
Hegseth announced the relaxation of disciplinary protocols and reduced hazing protections, emphasizing the removal of safeguards implemented by the military following numerous scandals and investigations.
He ordered a review of "the department's definitions of so-called toxic leadership, bullying and hazing to empower leaders to enforce standards without fear of retribution or second-guessing."
The defense secretary called for "changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records that will allow leaders with forgivable, earnest, or minor infractions to not be encumbered by those infractions in perpetuity."
"People make honest mistakes, and our mistakes should not define an entire career," Hegseth remarked. "Otherwise, we only try not to make mistakes."
Bullying and toxic leadership have been identified as factors in numerous military suicides in recent years, including the tragic case of Brandon Caserta, a young sailor who took his own life in 2018 following bullying.
A Navy investigation determined that Caserta's supervisor's "noted belligerence, vulgarity and brash leadership was likely a significant contributing factor in (the sailor)'s decision to end his own life."
Hegseth used the opportunity to criticize environmental policies and transgender service members while emphasizing his and Trump's focus on "the warrior ethos" and "peace through strength."
Hegseth stated that previous administrations had insisted that "our diversity is our strength," which he labeled an "insane fallacy."
"They had to put out dizzying DEI and LGBTQE+ statements. They were told females and males are the same thing, or that males who think they're females is totally normal," he said, adding electric tanks and COVID vaccine requirements to his list of problematic policies.
Hegseth clarified this is not about preventing women from serving.
"But when it comes to any job that requires physical power to perform in combat, those physical standards must be high and gender neutral," he explained. "If women can make it excellent, if not, it is what it is. If that means no women qualify for some combat jobs, so be it. That is not the intent, but it could be the result."
Hegseth's address came as the nation faces a potential government shutdown and as he has taken several unusual actions, including reducing the number of general officers and dismissing other top military leaders.
Hegseth has advocated for the military's involvement in securing the US-Mexico border, deploying forces to American cities as part of Trump's law enforcement initiatives, and conducting operations against boats in the Caribbean allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
