Boeing Developing Next-Generation Aircraft to Replace 737 Max Amid Safety Concerns

Boeing has issued a statement confirming their current focus remains on their recovery strategy.

Boeing Co. has initiated development on a next-generation single-aisle aircraft that may eventually replace the 737 Max, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The new narrowbody aircraft is currently in early developmental stages, which encompasses internal design work and preliminary discussions with potential engine manufacturers, as reported by sources familiar with the project.

Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg reportedly met with Rolls-Royce executives in the United Kingdom earlier this year to discuss engine options for the new aircraft. Additionally, Boeing has appointed a new senior product leader within its commercial aircraft division who previously specialized in new aircraft development.

This development comes amid growing concerns from investors and travelers regarding the safety record of the 737 Max, following an incident where a panel detached from an Alaska Airlines jet during flight last year. This event has become Boeing's most significant crisis since the worldwide grounding of the entire Max fleet in 2019 following two fatal crashes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Ortberg has not publicly announced any formal plans for a 737 successor. Boeing's official statement maintains that the company remains committed to its current recovery plan.
