A government school principal in Himachal Pradesh has become the subject of widespread social media ridicule after signing a cheque filled with significant spelling errors. The cheque, dated September 25, was issued to a mid-day meal worker but was promptly rejected by the bank due to numerous mistakes in writing the amount in words.
The cheque was written for Rs 7,616 in the name of Atter Singh. The writer made multiple errors when attempting to spell out the amount. "Seven" was incorrectly written as "saven," while "thousand" was bizarrely replaced with "Thursday." Although "six" was spelled correctly, "hundred" was written as "harendra," and instead of "sixteen," the writer put "sixty."
Though it remains unclear whether the senior secondary school principal personally wrote the cheque, many have criticized the failure to verify such basic spelling before signing an official financial document.
The incident has sparked considerable debate on social media platforms. One user commented, "This is the condition of teachers, which is why no one wants to send their children to government schools. People like us, who have studied in government schools, feel very sad. Well, systems are changing everywhere, so why should schools be left out?"
Another commenter humorously remarked, "Fault in autocorrect system of pen!"
Some social media users have used this incident to criticize the reservation system, calling instead for merit-based selections for important educational positions.
