The iconic Mahatma Gandhi statue in London's Tavistock Square was discovered defaced with disturbing graffiti on its plinth, prompting immediate condemnation from Indian officials.
London:
The Indian High Commission has strongly condemned the vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Tavistock Square in London, which occurred just days before the planned October 2nd Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at the site.
The plinth of the revered statue, which portrays the Father of the Nation in his characteristic meditative seated position, was found defaced with offensive graffiti. The Indian mission has promptly reported the incident to local authorities, while its representatives have visited the site to oversee restoration efforts aimed at returning the monument to its original condition.
"The High Commission of India in London is deeply saddened and strongly condemns the shameful act of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London," stated the Indian High Commission through an official social media announcement.
"This is not just vandalism, but a violent attack on the idea of non-violence, three days before the International Day of Non-Violence, and on the legacy of the Mahatma. We have taken this up strongly with local authorities for immediate action, and our team is already on site, coordinating with authorities to restore the statue to its original dignity."
Gandhi Jayanti, which the United Nations recognizes as the International Day of Non-Violence, is traditionally celebrated with floral tributes and performances of Gandhi's favorite bhajans at the London monument every October 2nd.
The bronze statue, established with support from the India League, was unveiled in 1968 at Tavistock Square as an acknowledgment of Mahatma Gandhi's time as a law student at the nearby University College London. The plinth bears the inscription: "Mahatma Gandhi, 1869-1948".
Both the Metropolitan Police and Camden Council have confirmed they are investigating the reported vandalism incident.
