UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has revealed plans to implement a free digital identification system for both British citizens and residents as part of efforts to address illegal immigration issues.
According to the government announcement, this digital ID initiative will simplify access to various services including driving licenses, childcare support, welfare benefits, and tax record management.
The digital identification will be stored on individuals' mobile phones. The government has clarified that carrying this ID will not be mandatory, nor will people be required to produce it randomly.
However, the government statement emphasized that using the digital ID "will be mandatory as a means of proving your right to work" in the United Kingdom.
Officials explained that this requirement aims to prevent unauthorized individuals from obtaining employment, thereby reducing a key incentive for illegal entry into the country.
This policy announcement comes at a significant time as the Labour Party prepares for its annual conference, with Prime Minister Starmer facing considerable pressure on immigration policies.
"Digital ID represents a tremendous opportunity for the UK... and will provide numerous benefits to ordinary citizens," Starmer stated.
He added, "We are doing the hard work necessary to create a fairer Britain for those seeking positive change rather than division."
While the United Kingdom has historically opposed national identity cards, recent polling indicates growing public support for such measures.
