Russia Offers India Partnership in Nuclear Power Plant Localization: Expanding Strategic Energy Cooperation

Russia's Rosatom has proposed collaborating with India on localizing both large and small nuclear power plants, building on their existing strategic partnership. The offer came during the IAEA conference in Vienna, as the two nations review progress on the Kudankulam NPP project and explore new opportunities for nuclear energy cooperation, leveraging India's strong industrial capabilities.

Rosatom has successfully commissioned two units in the first phase of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, India.

Russia has extended an offer to India for cooperation in the localization of both large and small nuclear power plants as part of their ongoing civil nuclear energy collaboration, according to a Friday announcement.

Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom is currently constructing the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (NPP) in Tamil Nadu, India.

Rosatom's Director General Alexey Likhachov presented this offer during his meeting with the Indian delegation at the 69th annual session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference held in Vienna from September 15-20.

"Discussions with India, one of Rosatom's key strategic partners, focused on expanding collaboration in peaceful nuclear energy development. Rosatom proposed working with India on localizing both large-scale and small-scale nuclear power plant projects, leveraging India's robust industrial capabilities," stated a Rosatom press release.

The parties reviewed the construction progress of four units currently underway at Kudankulam NPP for phases II and III. They also explored potential opportunities for further cooperation, including the serial construction of Russian-designed large and small nuclear power plants across India.

Rosatom has already completed and commissioned two units in the initial phase of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant project.

During the annual forum, Rosatom, which is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Russia's nuclear industry, showcased its technological achievements, innovative projects, and strategic vision for nuclear energy's future on the global stage.

According to previous reports, Rosatom, which is currently building the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh, has signed an agreement with India to source certain equipment for this project.
