London Mayor Sadiq Khan has responded to allegations made by former US President Donald Trump during his address at the UN General Assembly in New York, as reported by The Metro. During his speech, Trump alleged that Khan was attempting to implement Sharia law in London and described him as a "terrible mayor".
A spokesperson representing Mayor Khan officially stated they would not honor Trump's "appalling and bigoted" comments with a formal response. However, when approached by Metro during the inauguration of London's new electric bus route, Bakerloop (BL1) connecting Waterloo and Lewisham, Khan briefly addressed the situation.
Khan remarked, "People will be wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, successful, diverse city. It seems to me that I'm living rent-free inside Donald Trump's head."
When questioned about Trump's apparent fixation on him, the mayor humorously suggested, "I think he's got a crush on me. It's either that or he believes in giving me squatters' rights inside his head."
In a subsequent interview with Sky News, Khan stated that the US President had demonstrated he is "racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic and he is Islamophobic" through his comments.
Earlier today during morning interviews, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden expressed support for Sir Sadiq, noting that the president's criticism stemmed from 'a beef' he has maintained with the mayor for years.
McFadden told BBC Breakfast: "As regards the United Kingdom, on the comments on London, look, I just think it's a misreading of our great capital city. This is a big asset to the United Kingdom. It's known all over the world; it's a big engine of our economy, of creativity."
Speaking to GB News from Crystal Palace's stadium in south London, he emphasized, "We have British law here at Selhurst Park this morning, no other kind of law, and that's what applies in our capital city and throughout our country."
This latest exchange continues the history of tension between the two political figures, with Trump's comments once again facing criticism for propagating misinformation and making divisive statements.
